On Wednesday’s broadcast of CNN’s “Cuomo Primetime,” Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D) praised President Joe Biden’s climate actions and addressed criticisms that they’ll hurt jobs by stating that fighting climate change helps create jobs and that “We do not want to shackle our children to the dead weight of jobs that aren’t going to exist 30 years from now.”

Host Chris Cuomo asked, “ow do you finesse the aspect of the other party…on this, they’ve got a great angle. Every time you do something that’s green, you’re taking green out of their pockets. Keystone Pipeline, costing jobs. No more drilling, costing jobs. Jobs matter more to people than the environment when you look at polls. How do you bridge that gap?”

Inslee responded that fighting climate change doesn’t hurt jobs, and that the opposite is true.

He added, “Listen, the other side wants to shackle people to a past of an area of declining jobs. This is a reality. We do not want to shackle our children to the dead weight of jobs that aren’t going to exist 30 years from now. We want to give our kids the jobs that are growing, and this is — the number one job creation engine is clean energy. And I couldn’t be more tickled. Look, this is a hallelujah moment from my view. We have crossed the desert of denial and deception about climate change and we have a president who understands how to create jobs and he’s doing that big-time today.”

Governor Jay Inslee

Governor Jay Robert Inslee took office as Governor of Washington in January of 2013. His current term ends on January 13, 2025. A member of the Democratic party, Governor Inslee ran for re-election and won in November of 2020.

Inslee also ran for President, announcing his candidacy in March of 2019 and focusing his campaign on a message of fighting climate change. However, he dropped out of the race and suspended his campaign in August of 2019 and focused on running for Governor of Washington again.

What Governor Inslee Used to Do

A native of Seattle, Washington, Jay Inslee earned a degree in economics at the University of Washington and attended law school at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Before attending the University of Washington, Inslee dropped out of Stanford University because he was unable to obtain a scholarship. From 1976 to 1984, he served as a city prosecutor in Selah, Washington.

In 1988, Inslee was elected to the Washington House of Representatives, where he served two terms. He served in Congress from 1992 to 1994 and then again from 1998 to 2012, representing Washington’s 1st Congressional District. In 1996, he made an unsuccessful run for governor of Washington. After he lost in the primary, former President Bill Clinton chose him to serve as regional director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and he did so until 1998.

He served on the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce and was re-elected to Congress six times before winning the 2012 governor’s race back in his home state. During the 2018 election cycle, he served as chair of the Democratic Governors Association.

Before he was elected as governor in 2012, Inslee opposed the Iraq war, and worked to increase accountability and oversight for Wall Street banks.

On November 6, 2018, Inslee lost a bid to enact a statewide carbon emissions tax, for the second time in two years.

Inslee voted in favor of the 1994 assault weapons ban, and for a $820 billion stimulus bill after the 2008 recession. He welcomed more than 1,500 refugees into the state in 2018, the second-most of any state.

Inslee’s biggest issue he faces on is climate change – this was the main (and pretty much only) issue of his campaign. But to Inslee, climate change is actually is connected to a host of policy challenges facing the country, from health care to racial justice to national security.

In Inslee’s words: “We know climate change is as much a matter of equity as it is a matter of ecology. It is the communities of color that suffer from climate change first and worst.”

He also claimed that climate change could help reimagine foreign policy in the US. Inslee also called for doubling the investment the U.S. would make in the Global Climate fund previously pledged by the Obama Administration, as well as cutting fossil fuel subsidies.

In March of 2019, Governor Inslee signed a bump stock buy-back program into law a week before a nationwide ban took effect.

Governor Inslee has made sure the China and Washington are intertwined in international trade relations. According to the Washington State Department of Commerce, Washington exports more products and services to China than any other U.S. state. In 2018, exports totaled $14.3 billion. One in three jobs in Washington is tied to international trade.

In 2018, $4 billion of goods made in Snohomish County were purchased by China. In return, China serves as a major supplier for many of Snohomish County medical device and aerospace manufacturers. Paine Field, the Snohomish County-owned airport, “is responsible for over $20 billion in economic activity. A large portion of that activity involves trade with China.

In March 2020, Governor Inslee signed the comprehensive sex education bill into law, requiring comprehensive sex education for students in kindergarten through 12th grade

Governor Inslee released his 2021-2023 budget proposal that focused on COVID-19 response and recovery, including significant funds to strengthen the public health system.

Another one of Inslee’s hot-spot activities is yet another attempt to put a tax on carbon emissions. He’s done this before, and none have passed. However, he’s proposing a cap-and-trade plan where the state’s largest polluters would buy and trade allowances.
